How To Prepare for Your HVAC Installation

Congratulations on choosing your new HVAC system! The next important step for your HVAC is installation day, which is probably fast approaching. To help your HVAC installation go as smoothly as possible, our team compiled a checklist of things you can do at home to prepare for the big day:
Clear the Installation Area
Clearing the space around the install area before technicians arrive seems like common sense, but few homeowners do this helpful step. We recommend moving furniture, decorations, or any other items blocking access.
For the outdoor HVAC units, ensure the installation areas have at least 2 to 3 feet of clearance for proper airflow. This involves removing any plants, bushes, or outdoor furniture.
Turn Off Utilities in Advance
Turning off the power source for your new HVAC system, whether it’s gas or electric, saves everyone time. You can do this about 10 minutes before your technicians arrive.
Gas-Powered HVAC Systems
To turn off your gas supply, you’ll need to find the main gas shut-off valve, which is usually near your gas meter on the side or front of your house. Note that it could be inside a cabinet meter.
To stop the gas flow to your building, first take note that the valve will be “on” in a vertical position. To turn off the gas, simply turn the valve to the horizontal position.
Electric-Powered HVAC Systems
To turn off the electric power to your building, you’ll need to turn off the main circuit breaker, which is located in your main electrical panel, typically in the basement or near the laundry. The main circuit breaker is usually located at the top of the circuit panel as a lever or a double-wide switch.
You can safely turn it to the “OFF” position a few minutes before your HVAC installers arrive.
Ensure Easy Access to Important Areas
Ensure Access to the Breaker Box
Clear away all obstructions to the breaker box so your technicians can access your electrical system easily. During the installation process, your installers will need to work with your breaker box to connect the new system.
Access to Workspaces
Ensure any areas where technicians will need to move around are clear and accessible, including attics, crawl spaces, or utility closets.
Protect Your Home
HVAC installations can bring up dust and debris, so we recommend the following:
Protect Your Property
Our HVAC installers take great care to be respectful of your house by wearing booties and cleaning up after themselves during installations. You can do your part to protect your home from dust and debris by covering furniture and flooring.
Secure Pets and Children
Plan to keep your pets and children away from the installation area to prevent accidents or other issues.
Communicate with Your HVAC Contractor
Communication is key to every successful HVAC installation.
Confirm Details and Access
Take a moment before installation day to confirm the installation details with your HVAC contractor, such as the arrival time of technicians and any access points they will need.
Discuss Special Instructions
Share any special instructions or preferences you may have with the contractor in advance so they can accommodate you.
Have the New System Ready
Your new HVAC equipment should be delivered before installation day.
Prepare for Delivery
Be sure to communicate with your HVAC contractor to confirm the delivery day for your new HVAC system.
Verify All Components
Once it’s delivered, verify that all the components are present and ready for the technicians. If you have any questions or concerns, call your HVAC contractor for help before installation day.
Make Sure the Contractor Has Parking
Ensure the HVAC team has ample room to park and place their equipment on your property.
Plan for Your Comfort During Installation
Taking steps to ensure your home comfort during install day will help you stress less and avoid any unpleasant surprises. We recommend:
Planning for Downtime
There may be a few hours without heating or cooling in your home. You may decide to leave your house or move to a special location within your house away from the activity, where you can have privacy and be comfortable.
Keep Essentials Handy
In your designated space, bring snacks, drinks, medications — anything you may need during installation day that you might not have easy access to while the technicians are working.
Installing a new HVAC system is exciting, but it can also be stressful. Fortunately, a little advance planning is all you need to enjoy your HVAC installation day. Simple steps like clearing away obstructions, preparing for downtime, and communicating with your contractor can make all the difference!
